How Many Burglaries Happen Each Day in the US?

  • Hermina Drah
  • December 2, 2021

In the US, home burglaries happen all the time. That’s why it’s crucial to not only protect your home with security devices and alarms but also arm yourself with the latest statistics.

The more you learn, the better you can protect your family and home.

How Many Burglaries Happen Each Day?

Each day, an estimated 4,800 burglaries happen in the States. That figure implies there’s a burglary occurring every 15 seconds. Interestingly, the country with the highest burglary rate is New Zealand, with 1,353.6 cases per 100,000 citizens as of 2018. NZ is followed by Chile, Denmark, Cabo Verde and Dominica.

Insightful Burglary Statistics

In this section, we’re going to address some of the most common stats-related questions people have about the occurrence of burglaries.

There were around 1,230,149 burglaries in the US in 2018.

(FBI)

When compared to home invasion statistics from 2017 (when the figure was at 1,401,840), we can see that there was a 11.9% drop in the number of such incidents during the given period. Twenty years ago, however, 2,116,531 burglaries were recorded in the States.

Most burglaries happen during the day.

(ADT)

The chances of someone breaking into your house at night are lower than during the day. According to stats, break-ins typically happen between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. The reason is that homeowners are less likely to be present during those hours than at night.

However, an average of 1,324,090 burglaries happen at night.

On the other hand, house burglary stats reveal that during the day, this crime is committed 1,495,790 times. Not only are burglars less likely to strike at night, but also in February, when it’s cold and snowy.

Without a security system, your home has a 300% higher chance of being burglarized.

(PCMag, Alarms.org)

A house break in is indeed more likely to happen if you don’t have a home security system, but sadly, just 17% of homes have one installed. In addition, a survey involving 986 people showed that less than half (43%) possessed at least one security camera.

It’s estimated that 1 in every 36 homes in the US is burglarized yearly.

(ASecureLife)

The chances of your house being robbed are relatively slim, but the numbers are still alarming. Moreover, FBI data from 2018 indicate that, on average, homeowners lost $2,799 per burglary that year.

In 2018, burglary victims had a property loss of around $3.4 billion.

(FBI)

Additionally, burglaries made up 17.1% of the total number of property offenses. Additionally, 65.5% of the total number were residential property burglaries. Luckily, 85% of homeowners in the US have home insurance.

Home burglary data shows the front door is the most common entry point for burglars.

(ADT)

More precisely, this is the case in 34% of burglaries, and the break in is achieved simply by twisting the doorknob and walking in. Another 23% involve open windows on the first floor, 22% the back door, and about 9% of criminals break in through the garage.

Conclusion

Although the number of burglaries in the US is dropping each year, it’s still far from being a negligible issue for homeowners. Hopefully, these statistics have opened your eyes to the reality of this problem.

Remember to use the latest technology, neatly trim shrubbery to reduce hiding spots, and keep your valuables protected.
