A new 12-week study shows that a vegan diet can reduce the symptoms of menopause. The participants in the study, conducted by the North American Menopause Society, reported improvements in their appetite, energy levels, and even sexual life.
So, should you switch to a vegan diet?
Just to be clear—a woman can’t avoid going into menopause. However, some of the symptoms that commonly accompany the end of one’s reproductive years—hot flashes, for example—vary in severity, and this study, called “Women’s Study for the Alleviation of Vasomotor Symptoms (WAVS),” suggests they can be relieved by adjusting one’s diet.
Thirty-eight postmenopausal women completed the study, 17 in the intervention group, which had their diet changed, and the rest in the control group. Fifty-nine percent (10/17) of the women in the intervention group, who had moderate and severe hot flashes, said the flashes had disappeared entirely. And for 84% of women in the same group, the number of severe and moderate hot flashes reduced almost fivefold.
Furthermore, 79% of those who experienced moderate hot flashes reported a reduction in their frequency in the questionnaire, compared to 49% in the control group. Some women also reported a reduction of all vasomotor symptoms like night sweats and flushes.
Researchers believe that the soy-rich vegan meal plan the study participants followed contributed to this thanks to all the phytoestrogen it contains. Phytoestrogens are estrogen-resembling compounds that might have similar effects on the woman’s body. They are often marketed as a natural alternative to estrogen-replacement therapy; however, at this point, more research is needed to determine phytoestrogens’ exact effect on human health.
The results of the present study seem promising, especially because you don’t need a prescription or a visit to the doctor’s office to switch to a vegan diet and attempt to relieve your symptoms. Plus, with all the excellent meal delivery services, you don’t have to be an expert cook to enjoy savory vegan food. All you need is the vegan menu of your favorite delivery or a vegan-specialized delivery like Purple Carrot, Prime Roots, and others.
