Many people believe that fresh food is always better than processed food. Let’s face it: organic farm-to-table vegetables sound a lot more appetizing and healthy than canned veggies, don’t they?
However, there are certain foods that aren’t necessarily better when fresh, and some processed foods are actually healthier than you’d expect.
People have been conditioned to think that fresh food is always better as it has no additives and includes all the essential nutrients. Yet a recent study on vegetables conducted in 2017 compared fresh vegetables that had been stored in a fridge for a few days with frozen vegetables. The results — little to no difference in nutritional value.
Furthermore, vegetables are just the tip of the iceberg; there are plenty of foods that stay healthy even when processed in some way. Conversely, some fresh foods actually contain toxins that are bad for our health.
For example, kidney beans need to be soaked for a while before they can be edible or they can cause stomach issues. And dairy milk needs to be pasteurized or it can cause health problems.
Namely, if only fresh foods and produce were healthy, a lot of people would have no access to healthy foods. Many people live in remote places with no grocery stores in sight to buy fresh food from. Hence, for them, processed foods are a far better alternative. Also, this doesn’t necessarily mean that they can’t stay healthy while eating processed foods and frozen vegetables.
If you’re worried about your health, you can look up which processed foods are healthy when processed and which should be avoided. Of course, you could also consider switching it up and getting takeout delivered to your very doorstep by ordering a healthier meal delivery service.
