A seemingly German-made campaign ad to help hungry Americans caused a big stir six years after its initial release, following a TikTok post uploaded last week.
The video published by the TikTok account under @teresamorcho went viral, reaching 9.3 million views in just three days and miles-long lines of comments. So, what triggered such a response?
In the emotionally charged video, a young girl faces the camera with a teddy bear in her arms. Meanwhile, in the background, a female narrator explains in German that many people in the States are affected by low access to nutritious food.
The narrator further states that the girl’s life will be at risk of preventable diseases like diabetes and heart disease because of her malnutrition. It also states that a staggering 49 million Americans face food insecurity.
The video ends with the woman’s plea for Germans to help America change the situation. The plea is followed by a shocking infographic showing that 20% of the US population struggle with hunger and lack of nutrients, compared to 6% of Germans.
However, the emotional impact of the disheartening data presented got counterbalanced by a rather unexpected fact—the ad is not part of a German charitable campaign to help feed the US.
To be exact, the video titled Germany for America was made in America back in 2015 alongside others like China for America and Slovenia for America, all raising the world’s awareness of the given issue in the United States.
Despite wasting approximately 150,000 tons of food each day, millions of Americans still struggle with hunger and have limited or no access to healthy food. Finally, about 38.3 million Americans faced food insecurity in 2020.
