HOW WE CHOSE THE BEST-RATED COMFORTERS

Our Ranking Methodology

We evaluated and reviewed dozens of the most popular comforters on the market right now and compiled a list of the 10 best and most comfortable duvets.

Here’s how we did it:

Comfort & Feel

The first thing we inspected was how the comforter feels.

  • Is it soft and silky to the touch? Does it look and feel luxurious and plush?
  • Is it light and thin or heavy and burdensome?
  • How much warmth does it provide? Is it suitable for all seasons?

After answering these questions, we tested the final and most crucial aspect: comfort. We eliminated the lumpy, unpleasant comforters, sticking only to the coziest and comfiest ones.

All the best comforters on our list will make you feel like you’ve been wrapped up in a big fluffy cloud. Needless to say, they’ll definitely make waking up in the morning and leaving the bed a bit harder.

Materials

Our selection of comforters includes a wide range of shell materials, fills, and constructions. The one thing they all have in common is the superior quality of the materials used.

We ensured that all the comforters in our rankings are made of the finest materials and are 100% safe and durable.

Construction

The stitching and the thread count in the shell determine how evenly the fill is distributed, i.e., if it forms lumps or starts to leak through the cover. That’s why our reviews of the best comforters in 2020 list only those with tightly woven fabric in the cover and the best-quality construction.

Care and Maintenance

Spot-cleaning and lugging the comforter to the dry cleaners is a hassle, so we ranked products that are machine-washable higher on the list.

Variety of Models

Size, color, and pattern might seem insignificant compared to ranking the best comforter sets and duvets on comfort and quality, but these features are important nonetheless. After all, a comforter isn’t just a piece of bedding, but a design element in your bedroom too.

All the items we reviewed come in standard sizes and fit snugly into duvet covers, so you can change the color and pattern as much as you like and get added protection as an extra benefit.

Price Point

Comforters and bedding can be quite expensive, especially if they incorporate high-end materials like real down (some king comforter sets can go as high as $300).

To make sure you aren’t overpaying, we included reasonably priced models and brands that are known to offer frequent sales and discounts, a generous warranty, and strong return and shipping policies.

User Reviews and Experiences

For a truly unbiased ranking, we didn’t just look at positive accounts and experiences—we considered negative comments and complaints, as well.

In the end, we were left with the 10 highest-rated, most-recommended comforters.

THE BEST COMFORTER AND YOU

Buyer’s Guide

Unless you live in the tropics, chances are you need or already have a comforter.

Although a comforter isn’t as expensive as a new bed or mattress topper, it’s still worthwhile to be shopping-savvy and do your due diligence before buying one.

Here are the most important factors to consider:

Down vs. Down Alternative

The two most common materials used in comforters include down—a natural insulation material sourced from ducks and geese—and down alternative or a comforter made from a synthetic polyester blend.

There are advantages and drawbacks to both, so what you choose is entirely up to you.

  • Down is sourced from underneath the feathers of geese and ducks. Although geese are considered the fluffier of the two, and thus their down is used in the more high-end comforters, both types have their benefits, and users won’t go wrong with either option. Down provides much more insulation than synthetic materials, meaning the best down comforters will be light and airy but still provide a solid amount of warmth.
  • On the other hand, down-alternative fill is cheaper, but less breathable, which can leave some sleepers feeling clammy or sweaty. The biggest advantage of down alternative comforters is that they’re hypoallergenic and perfect for people suffering from sensitives, particularly down allergies.

Fill Power

Fill power measures the comforter’s loft, i.e., how much space one ounce of down takes up.

The more space the down fills, the higher the fill power, resulting in a lighter, fluffier comforter.

A good-quality comforter ranges between 500 and 750 fill power. The best lightweight comforters should have around 400 fill power, one suited for all seasons ranges between 400 and 600, and warmer comforters typically range higher than 600.

Fill Weight

Fill weight is the amount of down in the comforter.

Manufacturers categorize weight into light, medium (or “all season”), and heavy comforters.

Most people who sleep cold need a medium to heavy-weight comforter (or extra heavy if the temperature is below 60°F), while a light or medium-weight comforter would be best for hot sleepers. Note that people who tend to sleep hot, especially in rooms where the temperature is above 70°F, might not need a comforter at all.

The good news is that most of the best comforter brands manufacture products in multiple weight options, allowing you to choose the best one for you.

The fill weight and the fill power work together to determine how warm a comforter is, so it’s important to consider both when shopping. For example, if a comforter has 800 fill power, but only 30 oz. of down filling, it will be less lofty than a 700 fill power comforter with a fill weight of 60 oz.

When it comes to the best comforter material, such as down, it’s crucial to remember that quantity is not quality.

Construction

Construction refers to the way the comforter is stitched to keep the fill evenly distributed. There are two terms most commonly used in comforter construction: “sewn through” and “baffle box.”

  • Sewn through is when both sides of the comforter are sewn together, creating pockets of down. One of the benefits of this construction is low maintenance: the fill doesn’t have much space to move around, so chances of lumps forming are low. The downside is that sewn-through duvets are less lofty, so cold air might seep through the seams, reducing the comforter’s warmth-giving properties.
  • The best–rated comforters typically use baffle-box construction. Baffle box stitching includes an extra piece of vertical fabric, which is sewn between the comforter’s two sides. This creates a three-dimensional space for the fill, giving it more room to expand. Baffle-box construction retains more heat, but it should be shaken and fluffed regularly to even out down distribution.

Thread Count

Thread count shows how down-proof the comforter is.

In other words, it indicates if the shell material is woven tightly enough to stop the fill from poking through. The higher the thread count, the more likely the fill is to stay inside the comforter.

The exterior of the comforter cover, or the shell, is usually made of the following:

  • Cotton (the most commonly used material, and the softest)
  • A polyester blend (soft and breathable)
  • Silk (sleek and cool, but hard to maintain)
  • Wool (the best for breathability, but costly)

Duvet vs. Comforter

The technical definition of a comforter is a filled bed covering that’s sewn shut. It often comes with some decorative color or pattern and doesn’t need a cover.

On the other hand, a duvet is a bed cover filled with down or down alternative that’s made to be inserted into a cover. The cover can be washed or replaced as often as you like.

Allergies

The best comforter filled with down is fluffy, warm, and cozy, but it can be a nightmare for people with allergies. Even if the comforter has a hypoallergenic cover or has been washed several times, there’s no guarantee it won’t trigger an allergic reaction.

In short, people with severe allergies should definitely take a pass on down and look for synthetic blend comforters.

Care and Maintenance

To make sure your comforter stays plush and fluffy, it should be shaken every day and washed at least once a year, regardless if it’s a top-notch down or one of the best down alternative comforters.

If you’re a hot sleeper or own a pet, then washing your comforter more than once every six months is required.

Although some companies recommend dry-cleaning your comforter, experts disagree. They advise machine-washing it instead to ensure that the fill doesn’t get damaged.

Still, one of the best ways to care for your comforter is to use a duvet cover. A comforter with a cover is not only protected from exterior elements (dirt and dust mites), but it also prevents the fill from leaking or the fabric from discoloring.

Certificates

Try to find RDS (Responsible Down Standard) certified companies. RDS tracks the source of the down and will confirm if it was ethically sourced. For example, it will determine if the down was plucked from a live animal or not.

Size

Another essential aspect to consider is the comforter’s size, although this one is up to individual style and preference.

Some sleepers like to be wholly swaddled in oversized comforters, while others prefer a duvet that matches their bed size. Some might even want a smaller, twin comforter for just one sleeper. The good news is that comforters come in as many sizes as mattresses, so you can easily find what you’re looking for.

Where to Buy It

Some brands sell directly to customers, others use third-party retailers, and certain companies offer products through both channels. Make sure you research thoroughly before making a purchase as sometimes the best place to buy comforters isn’t directly from the manufacturer (certain sellers offer lower prices).

Personal Preference

In the end, it’s all up to you. What kind of comforter you need depends on what kind of sleeper you are (hot or cold), what kind of environment you sleep in, and of course, how much you’re willing to spend.

Bottom Line

Finding the right comforter for your particular needs shouldn’t be too hard, especially when there’s so much choice on the market.

Consider the most important factors—such as premium quality materials, superior construction, a high fiber power, and of course, the price tag—and you’ll be on your way toward a deep, relaxing, and comfy slumber in no time.

FAQs

What is the best down comforter?

Finding the right comforter for you depends on what you’re looking for. If you’re an eco-friendly shopper, you might want to buy products made of ethically sourced materials. If you’re a buyer on a tight budget, you should look for more affordable options, such as duck down comforters.

Whatever your needs, ensure that the comforter is made of good-quality down, has a high thread count (to avoid the fill from poking through), and has a solid fill power.

How should I wash my comforter?

Experts note that the best way how to wash a comforter is in the washing machine instead of dry-cleaning it. It may be preferable to do so at a laundromat with large-capacity washing machines and dryers. Use mild soap and cold water, and choose the delicate setting on the machine.

After washing, let the cover dry on low heat or set it to air fluff. Wet comforters shouldn’t be hung out to dry.

How do I pick a good comforter?

The first and most important thing is determining what kind of sleeper you are and taking it from there. Look for high-quality and certified materials (both in the fill and the shell), reputable brands that offer excellent value for your money, and a product that’s easy to care for and maintain.

Is a comforter better than a duvet?

A comforter and a duvet are basically the same thing—the most significant difference is that a duvet shouldn’t be used on its own but inserted into a cover instead.

How do I make my comforter fluffy?

If your comforter is feeling flat or lumpy (which is not uncommon over time), here are a few tips that could restore it to its former glory:

  • Shake it out every day. Give it a hard whip to set the fill back in its place.
  • Separate the clumps with your hand. Gently massage the lumps or give them a hard press until they’re broken up.
  • Hang it on a clothesline. The air will fluff out the comforter naturally and remove any unpleasant odors.
  • Dry it in a large commercial dryer (on air fluff). Put a couple of tennis balls wrapped in white socks into the dryer to help unclump the chunks of down.

What is the best comforter to keep you cool?

The best comforters aren’t just for cuddling on winter nights; they can also help you keep you cool while you sleep. If you’re a hot sleeper or live in a warmer climate, we suggest getting a lightweight comforter or adjusting the warmth with a duvet cover. A silk or linen cover on your comforter will make it feel much cooler and lighter.
